World Hikky Day / Journée mondiale du hikikomori

Chaque année depuis 2014, le premier avril est la journée mondiale du hikikomori… et ce n’est pas un poisson d’avril.

Every year since 2014, April 1st is “World Hikky Day” (World Hikikomori Awareness Day) … April fool’s day ? No.

Brief Note: “Hikikomori: Adolescence Without End” (Trans. J. Angles)

First sentence of the first chapter: “In November 1996 a tragic incident took place: a middle school student took a bat and beat to death his father, who was an office worker in Tokyo.” (Saitō, 2013, p. 17) The Japanese version states: “Heisei 8 nen 11 gatsu ni, Tōkyō no kaishain ga chūgakusei no musuko wo batto de nagurikorosu to iu, itamashii jiken ga arimashita,” which means, “In November 1996 a tragic incident took place: an office worker in Tōkyō took a bat and beat to death his son, who was a middle school student.”

Also, Saitō Tamaki uses the term kyohaku shinkeishō, which means “obsessional neurosis,” but this is translated as “obsessive-compulsive disorder.” In Japanese, “obsessive-compulsive disorder” is termed kyohakusei shōgai. Saitō Tamaki, however, is opposed to the DSM and refers to Lacanian psychoanalysis (Note: The translator refers to this as “Lacanian psychiatry” [Saitō, 2013, viii], a discipline that does not even exist).

” Pathology seen in French Hikikomori ”

Seishin Shinkeigaku Zasshi. 2012;114(10):1173-9.

[Article in Japanese]

Department of Psychopathology & Psychotherapy, Graduate School of Medicine/Center for Student Counseling, Nagoya University.

Young people who meet the definition of “Hikikomori” have come to be seen in France since around 2008. However, simply “fitting the definition” does not necessarily mean that they are the same as “Hikikomori” in Japan. Rather, it is important to ask what kind of young people “fit the definition of Hikikomori in France” and what kind of pathology they have. With these questions, our Japanese-French joint research team comprising specialists in various fields conducted a survey of “Hikikomori” in French youth, with support from a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research B (overseas research), and started a comparative joint study on “Hikikomori” in Japan and “Hikikomori” in France. In that study it was found that whereas one aspect of “Hikikomori” in Japan is described by the word déraillement (coming off the “rails”), “Hikikomori” in France is a state closer to dropping out and is accompanied by a type of “sense of insufficiency”. This “sense of insufficiency” is above all related to something in the society and culture of France, and an investigation of how it is linked to “Hikikomori” is an issue for the future.
